Sandstone is soft, porous and beautiful, and it does not forgive the wrong repair. Cement patches and hard mortars trap moisture, which drives salt damage and makes the stone fret faster. Our approach is traditional: breathable lime mortars, compatible repair materials and cleaning methods that do not strip the stone face.

Why lime mortar matters
Old sandstone and soft brick need to breathe. Lime mortar lets moisture move out through the joints instead of through the stone, so the joints wear rather than the stone. It is the standard approach for heritage masonry, and it is what we use.

Why not just use cement to patch sandstone?
Cement is harder and less breathable than sandstone. It traps moisture and salts, and the stone around the patch deteriorates faster. Lime-based repair mortars and stone indents are the right fix.
Do I need council approval for sandstone repairs?
Like-for-like maintenance is often allowed, but it depends on your council and whether the property is heritage listed. We can supply method notes to help.
Can you clean sandstone without damaging it?
Yes. We use low-pressure and chemical methods matched to the stone, never aggressive blasting that strips the surface.
Do you restore heritage brick too?
Yes. We repoint, repair and rebuild heritage brick facades, chimneys and parapets with matched brick and lime mortar.
